Astros Sign Lady is Unstoppable
New York City is not Barbara Moon’s favorite place to watch baseball. In fact, it’s probably her least favorite. But that didn’t stop her and her traveling crew of Houston Astros fans from heading to Yankee Stadium for Games 4 and 5 of the ALCS, dozens of cardboard signs in tow.
“Every time I held my signs up, [Yankees fans] would boo,” said Barbara Moon, fondly known as the Astros Sign Lady. “I dreaded coming to New York because we had an uneasy feeling last time when we came in 2017.”
Barbara has a different cutout sign for each Astros player that comes up to bat. She has special signs for the pitchers, too, and another sign with this season’s slogan “Take it Back.” She says it’s a chore to pack up all the signs and fly them from Houston to New York City. But even after getting boos from Yankees fans, she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’ll always show my support for the Astros no matter what,” she says.
Barbara wasn’t the only one harassed by Yankees fans. During Game 3 of the ALCS, several Astros players reported that Yankees fans were throwing debris onto the field during the game.
“It’s just baseball – you root for your team and we root for our team,” Barbara said after Game 3, clearly frustrated by the Yankees’ rowdy behavior. “The guy behind me told me I should have known better than to wear my Astros gear to the stadium because New York fans don’t like it.”
Barbara traveled to New York along with her husband Jimmy Moon and fellow ticket-holders Calvin Hoang, Minh Vuong, Susan Welbes, Nguyen Le and Yumi Le. She says many other season ticket-holder opted out of traveling for ALCS in order to avoid the crazy Yankees fans.
Although the Yankees fans may have felt annoyed by Barbara and her crew’s passion for Houston, the ‘Stros appreciated her support. Barbara received an email from Astros President Reid Ryan on Friday morning, thanking her for her unwavering commitment.
“Thanks for being in NYC for the games,” the message read. “Our guys love seeing you at the away games.”
As the Astros gear up to face off against the Washington Nationals in the 2019 World Series, Barbara is ready to help cheer on the team to victory.
