Hollywood in Houston
The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Ladies for Literacy Guild hosted the fourth annual Power of Literacy Luncheon at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston. The event, moderated by Ernie Manouse, featured Oscar-winning actress, singer and author Julie Andrews, along with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton. Nearly 800 guests were in attendance. This year’s luncheon co-chairs were Lilly Andress and Vicki West, and the backdrop for the stage was a hand-painted scene from Mary Poppins. The mother-daughter duo shared experiences from Andrews’ career and from writing more than 30 children’s books and Andrews’ new biography, Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years. The program closed with the Houston Children’s Chorus performing “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music while dressed as the children in the movie. Guests took photos with vignettes of Andrews’ starring roles in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, Victor Victoria, and The Princess Diaries, as eight students from the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts roamed dressed in costumes from Mary Poppins. The event raised more than $600,000. Pictured are (from left) Trish Morille and Sue Smith.
