Helping a Hero
Helping a Hero raised more than $1 million at its national gala held at the Marriott Marquis. More than 1,500 gathered to support the nonprofit’s programs, including building homes adapted for America’s wounded warriors. This year’s gala was chaired by Christine and Steve Johnson, Kay and Fred Zeidman, and Macy and Mayes Middleton. Honorary chairs included Mica Mosbacher and Chuck Jenness, and David Lavine served as auction chair. Helping A Hero chairman of the board David Balat presented ambassador Nikki Haley with the Patriot Award. The Defense Of Freedom Award was presented by Marine Captain Dan Moran to Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell. The Lee Greenwood Award was presented by country music icon Lee Greenwood to entertainer Kathie Lee Gifford for her volunteerism to kids, including military children. Greenwood sang “Proud to Be an American.” This year’s gala was dedicated to two World War II veterans, Dr. Stewart Morris, Sr., who served in the Navy and recently celebrated his 100th birthday, and Rex King, a 96-year-old Navy veteran and chairman emeritus of Helping a Hero.
