Houston sommeliers were put to the test for the title of Iron Sommelier at The Periwinkle Foundation fundraising event. Each competitor selected two wines, which focused on a particular wine region, grape or style. Judges Craig Collins, Antonio Gianola and June Rodil rated wine choice, presentation, creativity and knowledge of competitors’ wine selections. Ticket holders were provided a tasting flight of 12 wines to enjoy at home while virtually watching the judging presentation. Some underwriters enjoyed live presentations with sommeliers in small private venues. Evan Turner, Krasi Meze & Wine, took home the title of Iron Sommelier 2020 with his “Meet and Greek: Rare Grapes of Greece” theme. He also won Best Presentation and People’s Choice. Funds support Periwinkle Camps, Art and Survivor Programs that serve children, teens and families challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital.
