When the 2021 World Transplant Games presented by the Texas Medical Center were cancelled due to Covid, the Houston Sports Authority created the 5k AnyWay, a virtual race around the world that allowed participants to complete their race miles in any way they chose. Collectively, participants made a virtual trek from Houston around the world. For every 10 people who joined a 5k AnyWay team, a custom Build-a-Bear teddy was donated to a child currently on the waitlist. At the end of the eight-day race, an “out of this world” virtual celebration took place with the help of NASA and Space Center Houston. Pictured are (from left) Hayes McKibben, Jen Heerensperger, Mathew Tipton, and Kate Campbell, who completed their 5k by playing pickleball.
