Child advocates
More than 200 attended the annual Accolades Luncheon: “The Academy Awards of Child Advocacy,” hosted at Hotel ZaZa by the nonprofit Children at Risk. Event chairs were Olivia and Eric Barvin, and honorary chair was former Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards. Four leaders were recognized. The Champion for Children award was presented to Stephen Klineberg, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research. Larry James, CEO Emeritus of CitySquare, received the Maconda Brown O’Connor Legacy Distinguished Advocate Award. Texas Representatives Angie Chen Button and James Talarico were honored with the Voice for Children Award. Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO of Children at Risk, and board chair Devika Kornbacher emceed the event, which raised $135,000.
