Pershing seventh grader Sophie Martinez received the Gold Medal for the HISD Middle School Division for her piece, “This Cowdog Means Business.”

Eighteen Pershing Middle School students received awards from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual School Art Program. Among the highest honors, seventh grader Sophie Martinez (pictured) received the prestigious Gold Medal for the HISD Middle School Division for her piece, “This Cowdog Means Business.” Sophie’s artwork was inspired by her dog, Zelda. She was sad to lose her previous dog of 10 years in 2020. Several months later, Zelda, a stray dog, walked into her life and captured her heart. Sophie’s art was exhibited at the Hayloft Gallery throughout the Rodeo. Other artists of distinction include Victoria Wang for her piece “Longhorn,” Carol Wang for her piece “Ride Away,” and Eden Harris for her piece “Cat in Red.” All three were recognized as NRG Finalists.
