Houston Christian seniors play a game of “Rollercoaster” led by Stang Gang.

On Sept. 9, Houston Christian High School celebrated the start to a fall sports season with the help of their spirit team, the Stang Gang. Stang Gang MC, Mason Nuño, describes the group as a “hype squad,” whose main purpose is to encourage crowd participation and school spirit. For Mason, Stang Gang provides a unique opportunity to support HC athletics and raise excitement for sports seasons.

For their first pep rally, the Stang Gang helped choose the theme “Friday Night Lights,” encouraging students to dress up as football players, coaches, sport-obsessed fans, and, of course, football-loving dads. The seniors came decked out in football jerseys and baseball caps, some even bringing spatulas, to truly embody their individual theme: Dads Watching Football. Though they came in second place in the spirit competition, the seniors definitely gave their all to the theme.

The entire student body enjoyed an array of performances; the cheerleaders and Silver Spurs, the school’s drill team, both performed outstanding numbers. Each grade gave ten volunteers to participate in a tug-of-war competition (in which the seniors emerged victorious). Captains of the fall sports—football, field hockey, volleyball, and cross country—got to celebrate their sports’ successes and announce upcoming events. As cross country captain, I enjoyed getting to brag about my fellow runners and share the excitement of my team’s success. The pep rally truly embodied spirit; many upperclassmen (myself included) were surprised at how much energy each grade gave.

Students left the gymnasium energized like never before, hinting that this fall season will be one to remember. For seniors like myself, having a sports season full of fun and excitement is what makes the games count.
