Duchesne and IWA Powderpuff at St. Thomas
On December 18th, Duchesne and IWA students headed over to the St. Thomas’ Granger Stadium to compete for the Powderpuff trophy. In previous years, all the Duchesne Upper school grades would compete in Powderpuff, a flag football competition. However, this year the Duchesne Student Government reached out to IWA and asked them if Duchesne could compete against them and include them in this tradition. IWA accepted and each upper school grade from Duchesne and IWA went head-to-head and competed for the Powderpuff trophy and bragging rights of Powderpuff Champions.
Friday night was very cold and rainy so many girls came in rain jackets brought many blankets and hats to keep themselves warm. The constant wind also added to the dramatic and difficult wealthier conditions. Thus, the ball was slippery and slick which made it more difficult for the players to handle the ball. Duchesne, IWA, and St. Thomas students, and parents were invited to watch the players compete as well and could buy hot chocolate for two dollars. The St. Thomas boys were the coaches for each team and then a selected group of boys were the referees. The teams practiced on their own time in advance, and created strategic plays to elevate their game. Duchesne girls wore shirts with “Beat IWA” on the back and wore red and blue flags while IWA girls wore green flags.
Powderpuff started with the freshmen and sophomore games at 6:45 pm. The games were played simultaneously with the field was split in half. The Duchesne freshmen team dominated and won against the IWA freshmen ending with a score of 28-6. On the other half of the field, the IWA sophomores shut out the Duchesne sophomores by a touchdown with a score of 6-0. By the end of the two games, IWA and Duchesne were both tied with a win and a loss.
The junior game was a game to remember. The game went into double overtime with each team scoring a touchdown, so score was 6-6. Both teams had to complete a two-point conversion. With both teams offenses and defenses stepping up, no team could complete one after 2 rounds. The referees decided that it would come down to field goal kicks. The IWA juniors won the game 8-6 after nailing in a field goal after the Duchesne juniors missed. The last game of the night was the seniors game that began around 8:45 pm. The Duchesne seniors won their game with a score of 12-8. Both schools had the two wins and two losses, so it came down to point differential.
