DeBakey's Poetry Cafe
This month, the Interact Club at DeBakey hosted the Annual Poetry Cafe, where students had the opportunity to display their musical and literary talents! This event took place as final exam season creeps around the corner, providing students with the perfect outlet to destress and marvel at the diverse talents within DeBakey’s student body.
Many students performed original songs and poems at this Cafe. Amongst them was Fatima JuarezArchundia, a junior at DeBakey who performed her original poem, “Bubble Gum.” Fatima says that the inspiration behind the poem was completely random. “I was following a poetry prompt and the prompt was about advice. I asked my classmate about a piece of advice, and what they said was that not everything you hear is true. I was a little nervous going first but was glad to hear the support of the audience,” she said. Over thirty people showed up to this after-school event, and the crowd went wild after each performance.
Suzana Kitonge also performed an original poem, titled “In My Generation.” Suzana took many lessons and new experiences from others' writing through this event. “My favorite part [of the Poetry Cafe] was listening to the different emotions conveyed through the poems; I personally like to write and express myself through my emotions, so when I hear others express their emotions through their poetry, it’s really nice as well,” she stated.
After two years of postponement due to the pandemic, the DeBakey Poetry Cafe successfully returned and positively impacted the DeBakey community. Now, students can be encouraged as they take their final exams whilst internally humming along to all the tunes and heartfelt emotions performed at this event!
