It was history in the making for the Bellaire Cardinals boys basketball team, which advanced to the UIL State Basketball final with a 65-57 victory over San Antonio Brennan in the Class 6A State Semifinals. The victory over a Brennan team that was ranked number one in the state and number four nationally sends Bellaire to the State Championship game for the first time in school history.

Bolstered by a huge crowd of Bellaire fans who turned out to the state final four matchup at Texas Southern University, Bellaire led from start to finish while winning its 10th straight game. The victory also put an end to Brennan’s 22-game winning streak. Leading the way for Bellaire was the sensational play of Cardinals senior and Duke University signee Shelton Henderson, who scored 26 points in the victory while fellow senior Anthony Andrews added 16 points.

Bellaire now advances to face Duncanville for the 6A Division 1 State Championship Final, with the game being played this Sat., March 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. A victory would give Bellaire the first state championship in basketball for an HISD team since the Yates Lions accomplished the feat in the 2014-15 season.
