Caryn Honig and Michelle Fredricks (pictured, from left) were among the 400 participants at the third annual Poppy’s Run for Life 5K at Hennessy Park. The event raised $70,000 for suicide prevention, education, and awareness initiatives at Alexander Jewish Family Service and the Montrose Center. Honig, event founder and race director, created Poppy’s Run for Life after losing her grandfather and father, both called “Poppy,” to suicide. She says the question, "Is there anything I could have done to prevent either or both suicides?" plays over and over in her mind, and this fundraising effort is a good answer. Runners and walkers raced along a path through the University of Houston Downtown and the White Oak Bayou Greenway, while supporting efforts to improve mental health in the community.
