Houston Christian High School students produced a serene evening of music, artistry, and reflection beneath the stars on October 22nd. The annual Concert on the Lawn and Arts Exhibition transformed the school grounds into a celebration of creativity and community.
As guests arrived at Mustang Circle, they were greeted by the crisp resonance of the jazz band. Glistening trumpets and rhythmic percussion filled the air with Chameleon, creating a lively and welcoming overture. From there, the path led through the Mustang Corral, where the visual arts gallery captivated visitors with its variety of vivid paintings, finely detailed sculptures, and striking photographs displayed against the backdrop of instrumental music.
Settling onto the soft green lawn beneath the Founder’s Tree, attendees unfolded blankets and lawn chairs, and relaxed under the evening sky. The aroma of fresh grass mingled with the distant hum of conversation as Dr. Bobby Linhart, the director of fine arts, stepped forward to open the program with words of welcome and gratitude.
Next, the orchestra took the stage under the direction of Mr. Nady Benyamine. The performance began with a medley of video game themes from Minecraft, Super Mario, and World of Warcraft, arranged to evoke both nostalgia and wonder. The melodies carried the audience through time and stirred memories of childhood play and shared laughter. When the final note faded, and the atmosphere shifted from playful to reverent as members of the Houston Christian Chorale ascended the risers.
The opening choral selection, "Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel," resonated across the lawn with rich harmonies and controlled dynamics, and blended musical precision with spiritual depth. When the final chord concluded, Ms. Michelle Willey, the choir director, explained the story behind the previous piece and introduced the ensemble’s next piece, "Psallite Unigenito," a lively work in Latin and German. The rhythmic and staccato phrasing, paired with crisp diction, created a bright and energetic soundscape that echoed through the night air.
Once more, the audience’s attention turned to the Mustang Corral for the evening’s finale: the concert band performance. Before the first note was played, a deep, resonant voice - reminiscent of a planetarium narrator - guided the audience into an imaginative voyage through space. The band’s selections included themes from renowned science fiction soundtracks such as Star Wars, their powerful brass and sweeping woodwinds immersed listeners in a cinematic experience.
As the last chords diminished, the audience rose in applause to honor the students for their dedicated performances. That evening, a traditional high school concert evolved into a testament to the power of art to unite, inspire, and uplift. Beneath the Texas night sky, Houston Christian High School becomes a stage for creativity and reflection in its purest form.
