Memorial Mustangs Make the Most of Their 80 Days
For Memorial High School students, summer means an 80-day break from school. From vacations to volunteering, Memorial Mustangs chose to spend their summers in many different ways. Some returned to the camp they’ve been attending for years, while others tried new things during their summer break. Whether they were working at summer jobs or hanging out with friends, Mustangs made the most of their time off from school.
Freshmen Colby Kneppler and Amelia Todd enjoyed the summer at Camp Cho Yeh in Livingston, Texas. Kneppler has gone to camp there for eight years, and the summer of 2016 was Todd’s first year there. These friends have gone all through school together -- from Bunker Hill Elementary to Memorial Middle School – and are now together again at MHS.
Freshman Hannah Khairandish volunteered to spend her summer fostering a dog. The dog, whose name is Izzy, is from Pup Squad Animal Rescue. Khairandish took care of Izzy each day as if it were her own dog. She also took Izzy to adoption events over the summer to help the dog find a forever home.
I returned to Camp Lantern Creek for my fifth summer and went on a road trip with my family through Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi that ended with some beach time and a Twenty One Pilots concert in Alabama. I also went parasailing for the first time and loved it!
Not all students had a full 80-day break from school related activities. Summer closed in a little earlier for students involved in activities such as school sports or marching band since those practices started weeks before the actual first day of school. Many Mustangs, including myself, wish summer could last forever, but as school starts, it’s also a great time to look ahead at all of the fun and exciting experiences in store this school year.
