Art inspirations
Two years ago, Amazing Place, a day center devoted to adults with mild to moderate dementia, launched a weekly art class to provide participants with a creative outlet for expression. Many have never painted before but are showing talent and gaining pride from their works of art. Artists and volunteers Mary Alderson and Suzy LaForge developed the curriculum and have been teaching it since it started; both had parents with dementia as well as an interest in art. Art created by Amazing Place participants was enjoyed by the public at the St. John the Divine Art Gallery during August. Pictured is Memorial resident Jeff Davis, who’s proven to be prolific in his art, in front of three of his paintings at the art exhibit. One of his abstract paintings is featured on the cover of a new CD, Struggle Pretty, by singer/songwriters Penny and Sparrow, available on itunes.com.
