Philanthropic Field Trip
With the blessings of our VP of Sales Jay Janecek, I headed to the Harris County Pet Shelter with Account Executive Darsey Swaim. First stop was at Chestnut Animal Hospital who graciously loaned us a small crate. Our mission was to rescue Minnie Mae, a dachshund mix in line to be euthanized as she’d been there a week. I had seen a frantic appeal for help on Memorial Area Trading the night before and volunteered to rescue Minnie Mae while a home could be found.
The shelter opened for adoption at 1 pm. At around 1:05 we entered and handed in their paperwork. After a short wait we were taken to the kennel area – it was so heartbreaking to see the wonderful pets behind bars waiting for a home.
The last stall was Minnie Mae’s. Boy, what a cutie! She was much smaller than she’d appeared in her photo – probably less than 12 pounds. She was delighted to see us. We were led to a room where we could hold her. Unbeknownst to us at this point was that another woman had come in about three minutes prior and started adoption paperwork for her. We met the woman in the same room where we were petting Minnie Mae!
So the good news is Minnie Mae will definitely have a forever home. After her spaying surgery on Thursday if adopter number 1 fails to show, Minnie Mae goes with me.
Please consider adopting at shelters before visiting breeders. There were so many gorgeous dogs, many of which looked like thoroughbreds, waiting to go home. After a few days they are euthanized. It was a good two and half hours before we returned to work, but thanks to The Buzz we were allowed to use part of our working day for this good cause.
