On Dec. 24, 2017, there was a big brown box under our Christmas tree with a golden bow tied on top. It was almost as big as me, and the tag said “To Morgan.” It was from my Aunt Ruth and Uncle Tyler. I was begging my mom for clues, but she said she didn’t know what was inside. Waiting until Christmas to open it was so hard, and I kept trying to peek inside.

The next morning, my sister and I opened our presents, but I saved the big brown box for last. I had a feeling it would be the best one. When I finally opened it, I saw a shiny red pogo stick! As soon as I took it out, I ran to my back door porch to try it out.

At first, it was really hard, and I couldn’t balance on it even for a single jump. My older sister Natalia tried and could do it. My parents said it was because I didn’t weigh enough to make the spring bounce. I tried and tried all day but could only get up to five jumps in a row before I fell off. I was beginning to think my Christmas gift was going to become Natalia’s gift instead of mine.

All during Christmas break, I tried again and again to jump, and, one time, my dad held my body so I could feel what it felt like to keep both feet off the ground. Days before I had to go back to school, I had my best friend over for a sleepover. His name is Townes and has known me since kindergarten. He asked to see what I got for Christmas, so I showed him my pogo stick. He wanted to try it out and was pretty good after several tries.

After a lot more practice, both of us learned how to jump on my pogo stick! I feel good that I can do it now and will remember that I should never give up. I love my new pogo stick, and my best record for the number of jumps is 209.
