On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Memorial Mustangs Girls Varsity Basketball team started their district season with a win against Aldine Davis. Last year, both teams tied for District Champions, Memorial having lost the first game against them but then coming back and winning the second game.
This year, however, the Mustangs decided to kick off their season on a high, winning Tuesday’s game and the final score was 65-30. The team itself has grown since last year through their hard work, and they also have gained more experience with many of the same people on the team as last year. There is a sum of 10 returning varsity players and 7 seniors on the team.

In the game against Aldine Davis, the offense continuously attacked the basket and stayed in the lead throughout all four quarters. Courtney and Kelsey Slattery were both shooting three pointers like it was no big deal and Kelsey Slattery scored a total of 22 points.
The posts also did not disappoint. Amanda McCloskey, Elizabeth Eubank and Jordan Kreindler, who personally scored 9 points, repeatedly defended the basket and put up shots. Everyone who went out on the court went out with an intensity that was unstoppable. The energy from the crowd and the bench was almost palpable in the gym, and the players reflected that.

Finally, you wouldn’t want to forget both of the dominating point guards on the team. Giuliana Madrigali and Grace Yochum kept the game going, calling out the different offenses and plays for the team to run. Guiliana’s tenacity was a force to be reckoned with, and Grace scored 8 points, some gained from free-throws while others were scored by outside jump shots.
Overall, Memorial played an outstanding game over a very difficult team, and this upcoming season looks promising. Keep on protecting the stable, Mustangs!
