St. Mark's Episcopal School eighth graders volunteering at The Beacon

St. Mark’s Episcopal School’s eighth grade service project is at The Beacon. Pictured (from left) are eighth-grade students at The Beacon: Spencer Scheps, Sterling Smith, Giselle Henry, Dania Siddiqi, Gigi Gaetti and headmaster Garhett Wagers.

This year, St. Mark’s Episcopal School’s eighth grade service project is at The Beacon, a center which provides services to the homeless. At The Beacon, homeless people have the opportunity to eat a meal, take a shower and get their laundry done.

While recently volunteering at The Beacon, the eighth grade class worked in the laundry room. The students washed clothes and provided medical scrubs to individuals to wear while their clothes were being washed. The problem?  “A lot of these people don’t have much more than what’s on their back, and if they don’t have scrubs to wear, then their clothes will remain dirty,” wrote Madelyn Scholtes, the STMES eighth grader who started this campaign.

So, this Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the St. Mark’s parking lot, the eighth graders decided to host “Scrubs 4 Scrubs” in which the students will offer to wash a car in exchange for a pair of scrubs to donate to The Beacon. Don’t have scrubs? They’ll also be collecting: toilet paper, travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash and shaving cream. In addition, they will accept cash donations, which will go toward buying scrubs for homeless to wear while their laundry is being done at The Beacon. This project is entirely student-initiated and student-led.
