Memorial High School Juniors Begin the College Search
While we are approaching the holidays, which for most is one of the happiest times of year, high school juniors are about to begin one of the most stressful times of their high school career: the college search and application process. Even though applications for the class of 2023 don’t open for another nine months, many Memorial High School juniors have begun to tour colleges to see which schools would be the right fit for them.
Junior Evelyn Carney, who’s on the basketball team at Memorial High School, toured the College of Idaho over the summer while visiting family. The College of Idaho, located in the town of Caldwell, Idaho, has a student body of around 1,000. Ideally, Carney would like to attend a larger university, however, she did like that the College of Idaho was so small that she was even able to meet with the dean of the university and several admissions officers. If she did end up attending the College of Idaho, Carney feels like she would enjoy the close-knit environment of the school and have the opportunity to get to know every student that goes there.
Junior Macy Gregory, who’s the junior class president at Memorial High School, toured the University of Virginia located in Charlottesville. While the University of Virginia boasts about their ACC powerhouse football team, they also have a demanding academic curriculum. Gregory loved how pretty UVA’s campus was and the overall spirit of the school. In addition, she found the size of the university to be perfect. UVA sits at about 20,000 undergraduates, which Gregory said was the perfect middle ground. Gregory toured UVA in early November and said that both the town and campus were absolutely gorgeous.
Junior Anastasia Rubio, who’s on the swim team at Memorial High School, toured Louisiana State University over Thanksgiving break. Located in Baton Rouge, LSU is a land, air, and space grant flagship university with a student body of around 29,000 undergraduates. One of Rubio’s favorite parts about the university was its energetic study body.
“I loved how nice everyone was and how much spirit they have for their school,” Rubio said. Additionally, Rubio noted that she actually has lots of family in Louisiana so attending LSU would make the campus feel especially like home.
Up until May 1, 2023, when current high school juniors will have to commit to a college, many students will continue to tour colleges all across the country until they find their perfect fit.
