Memorial Unified: Promoting Inclusivity Around School
Memorial High School is home to a variety of clubs and organizations that highlight the diverse and unique student body. Memorial Unified Club, one of the largest growing clubs on campus, stands out especially, due to their mission to promote inclusivity amongst students with and without intellectual disabilities. Memorial Unified also provides students with an opportunity to practice leadership, kindness, and school spirit.
Throughout the year, Memorial Unified hosts multiple events that encourage students to get involved. The club throws a monthly party to build excitement for upcoming events. In September, Unified members hosted a mum-making party during the lunches of homecoming week. At this event, members and Special Education students paired up and made each other mini mums to wear around school. This event allowed all students to feel included in the homecoming festivities, and kick off a new year of Unified.
Additionally, Memorial Unified hosts many Special Olympics games of different sports throughout the course of both semesters. During these games, Special Education students are given the opportunity to play on a sports team, cheer on the sidelines, or perform at halftime for all their classmates to see. Students and faculty love to cheer their fellow mustangs as they take the field at this can’t-miss event.
One Special Olympics game Memorial Unified has already had the chance to put together is their first Unified golf match. In the past few weeks, Memorial Unified has been pairing up with the Memorial golf teams to bring this event to life. Players from both the boys' and girls' golf teams came out to share the love of golf with the Unified golf team. They assisted them in their game, helped them with technique, and had a fun afternoon. The event was very successful, and is just the first of many events happening this year.
Through these events, Memorial Unified is able to stress the importance of inclusivity, and give students a first-hand look at how kindness can work in the lives of others. The presence of Unified on campus has been more prominent than ever this year, with many new members joining. This has given them a great platform to share their message around school, which has spread around the community and neighborhood as well. As the year goes on, you can follow along with the club @memorialunified on instagram, for an inside look.
