Hearts for Hope: a Community of Kindness

High school students are undoubtedly a vulnerable population within our society due to the impressionability and still-developing mental capacities of adolescents. High school can be a tough place plagued with adversity and trials of trying to find an identity while balancing the stress of academics and the future. Though this can be a concern for kids falling into the wrong crowds and being influenced negatively, there is certainly an opportunity to use this impressionability for good.
At Memorial High School, students are becoming the catalyst for a kinder, better environment. Notably, a new club, Hearts for Hope has attracted the attention of students who want to work together to spread kindness. Started by junior Madeleine Andrews, Heart for Hope, she says, is a “community dedicated to spreading kindness and giving back to those who need it most.” Hearts for Hope is not merely a school club, but a growing community of students dedicated to making a difference, for themselves and for the future of the community.
Andrews started the club in early February, finally pulling the trigger on a project she haa always wanted to start. She started small by creating an Instagram account and posting, and reaching out to her friends. Soon enough, the few people who joined started to tell their friends, and Hearts for Hope grew exponentially. The goal for Hearts for Hope is simple, but a big one at that; to make the world a better place, one heart at a time. Through community service, donation drives, care packages, and simple events that bring people together, Hearts for Hope is encouraging students to have service-minded hearts as they graduate high school and navigate life as young adults, rallying for improvement and spreading kindness wherever they go. It is preparing them to be better human beings for the sake of community improvement, not just college applications or a resume boost.
In the future, Madeleine says she hopes to spread the mission of Hearts for Hope wherever the current members and leadership board end up, encouraging people all over to promote change in their communities and be the catalysts through kindness and service. She has already started expanding her organization to other schools in Houston and welcomes anyone who wants to join. Follow @hearts_for.hope to see more!
