There I was, with butterflies in my stomach, squeamishly weaving my way and dragging my backpack through a group of high schoolers.
“Excuse me,” I heard my suddenly high voice say to the tall boy who stood in front of me. “Sorry,” he replied while moving to the side, “I’m Ben, what’s your name? How’s your first day of high school been?”
As I answered sheepishly and continued on to my next class, more and more Bens started appearing. More kids warmly accepted me as an equal and as their friend. This is when I realized my true luck of going to Robert M. Beren Academy. After my first day of high school, I felt like a pro.
All of the sincere smiles and greetings gave me the confidence and motivation to go forward with a smile of my own. I look forward to next year, when I’ll be able to ask the new freshmen how their day has been.
