Jared Tulio, Claire Miller, and Beatrice Domingo scour the internet for fonts and color schemes.
At the Balfour Communications workshop, the torch has been passed among the yearbook staff. Veteran seniors Noah Melendrez, Beatrice Domingo, Jared Tulio, and Logan Jones and Claire Miller pass their knowledge and expertise on to freshmen Hayden Fawcett, newcomer sophomore Alexis Orlin, and new student Robert Williamson.
“The seniors showed us a lot of cool stuff, with yearbook and high school,” says Hayden. Outside of classes the group hangs out and plays cards. They talk about school approaching but the conversation always goes back to yearbook. Potential themes, interesting story ideas, and fresh layout ideas are tossed around many times, each different with the new information learned in classes. The new students absorb information on every part of making a yearbook, but the seniors learn new tricks too.
“The color trends elective was easily my favorite,” Hayden says.
“I learned a lot about how colors went together, particularly using CMYK values to figure out how colors best go together,” Jared says. The freshmen, Robert and Hayden, are both interested in going into photography. Veteran photographer Jared was more than happy to show them what he knew.
“I had never taken pictures with a nice camera before, I had only used my phone,” Robert says. “Although I had taken pictures before, I didn’t know any of the things he was telling me.”
“I remember coming to this camp 4 years ago and having Paige [Packwood ‘12] show me how to use a camera,” Jared says.” That was her last year and since this is mine, I really wanted to show the news guys what I know, and hopefully inspire them to continue great photography at the school. Maybe one of them will be doing the same thing in four years that I am - teaching the new generation.”
