Thierry Chu, a fifth grader at Annunciation Orthodox School, has learned to love writing through summer camp.
Writing, writing, writing. Some people take it as something to dread, but it’s something I love. I have gone to the Writers in the Schools (WITS) summer camp for several summers. I started off fearful, but now I adore writing and am constantly writing stories and poems. I love WITs. The faculty and staff make you feel comfortable.
A highlight in my class was when they taught us how to write something based on a piece of artwork. This particular class inspired one of my most beloved pieces of writing. That piece is called “Colorful Mourning.” I was inspired to write that from a painting titled “Sunrise Dinosaur Bones.” The painting was actually created by my WITS instructor that summer. It was mournful because of the bones, and yet there was so much color incorporated. So for my poem I mixed happiness with sadness. One line from the poem is “Colorful mourning, are the rainbows dying?” This is probably my favorite piece because it is so figurative.
I have learned many different techniques of writing but am always encouraged to let my imagination go wild. My public-speaking skills and courage were also built up through camp. Plus, I have made friends. Writing is a fun way to express whatever is on your mind. It can even help you through rough times. Writing is also a way to make the reader or audience know what you’re feeling. The audience will be put in your shoes. You can even inspire others with just one piece of writing. Everyone loves a good story, and it’s a fantastic feeling to be the one who wrote that story. Anyone can be a good writer at WITS. I think because of what I have learned, I have become a better student and person. Why don’t you give writing a try? You’ll see why it’s my passion.
