Shopping

Yesterday I took a moment to count how many email promotions I received: 19. Everyone has a sale, a must-have for today or the latest gadget that’s a necessity. I remind myself that “want” does not equal “need” but ultimately compile lists, make purchases, and move onto the next item on my to-do list.

Many women are just like me. The busy woman may or may not have kids in tow but will always have a list that goes into the double digits, money/credit cards in her wallet, a cell on her ear, and packages in hand. She is a multitasker. She is also a prime target.

“Crimes of opportunity.” It’s a simple notion that I want women to be aware of. Criminals look for an easy opportunity, a person who is busy, not paying attention and a profitable “hit”. During your next shopping spree, consider:

  1. Emptying your purse and wallet; carry only the essentials. This means: taking out the passport that you’ve been carrying since that trip you took three months ago,  the bank statement and paperwork from your child’s school, etc. You don’t need it; leave it at home.
  2. Holding onto your purse at all times and NEVER leaving it in your car. In fact, empty your car of all packages and items. Make sure you empty it before you park at your destination!
  3. Shopping in style but without a bulls-eye on you (i.e., designer duds and jewelry). Trust me, part of the FUN in shopping is getting dressed to do so; that said, when I really have a lot to do and especially when I’m alone, I leave valuables at home.
  4. Park in a well-lit area, as close as possible to the store entrance.
  5. Never walk back and forth to your car making “drop-offs”.
  6. Ask security to walk to your car if it’s late and you feel unsafe.

We want you to shop (and shop ‘till you drop) but to do so safely. Being ALERT is sometimes the greatest single thing you can do for yourself. Remember, safe shopping really does start with you.
