Go Northwest
The diverse trip started with an underground tour of the tunnels of Seattle, where the city originated before the fire of 1889 wiped it out. Nancy and Joe Smith and Californian friends then drove across the Cascade Mountains to apple and wine country on the Colombia River. The fall colors awakened their senses just as the quaint town of Lake Chelan claimed their pocketbooks with irresistible shops. Fortunately, the wineries were close together, 20 in 10 square miles. It was easy to accomplish wine tastings and browse apple orchards along the way.
