Colin Blakeslee, a third grader at First Baptist Academy, loves all things history and took a trip to College Station to visit the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
My family went to College Station to visit the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. I wanted to go because I am fascinated with world history and U.S. presidents.
There are exhibits that show President Bush’s life before, during and after he was president. These exhibits talk about his family life, his political career and his life after he left office.
In the World War II exhibit, there is a restored Avenger plane, the kind George H.W. Bush flew during the war, hanging from the ceiling. During a battle he crash-landed the plane in the ocean and climbed onto a life raft. He drifted at sea for hours until an American submarine rescued him. There was a video where George Bush talked about the feelings he had while in the lifeboat, knowing that if he were not rescued he could be captured.
There is also a Gulf War exhibit that included a situation room where we were briefed on the history of events leading up to the Gulf War. In the exhibit there were maps, a tent and a really interesting video where explosions shook and lit up the tent where we were sitting. There were soldiers dressed in their different uniforms showing how they looked when they protected Kuwait and the world from Saddam Hussein, who was looking for control over oil and wanted more power. There were lots of cool things in this exhibit, and I really liked it.
At the CIA exhibit they had a cool hand scanner where it would scan your hand, and then you could look in drawers that had interesting CIA things. I learned that George Bush earned three medals for his work in the CIA. This exhibit even had a real piece of the Berlin Wall.
We also went to the gift shop where I picked up a small stuffed Millie, the Bush’s springer spaniel, for my little sister Madeline and a leather bookmark for me. I had fun at the library and learned a lot too. If you haven’t been there yet, you should go!
