Jack and Lainie Stone, twins and fifth graders at Briargrove Elementary, both went to Camp Chief Ouray last summer.
We went to camp last summer at Camp Chief Ouray (oo-ray) in Colorado. While we were in the same camp, we each had unique adventures.
Lainie: I was with girls who played and colored. We made friendship bracelets, talked and laughed, shared jokes and did each other’s hair. It was like being on a week-long sleepover with the eight girls in my cabin. I slept on the top bunk but was on bottom for a day when I hurt my ankle playing Capture the Pirate. My bunk was where I wrote letters to family and friends, opened care packages, and talked with my new friend, Izzy.
The food tasted delicious. My favorite meal was hamburgers with pretzel buns. But most of all I loved making the camp specialty, ice cream cones filled with bananas, chocolate and marshmallows topped with sprinkles. They wrapped this delicious combination in tin foil and cooked it in the campfire. It was unbelievably great.
We played games like Tag, Carpet Ball, Hide and Seek and Capture the Pirates, and dressed up as tourists for the theme of the week, which was “Neverland.” The girls in my cabin were “The Lost Girls.” We did a mini-ropes course and learned archery. We hiked, canoed, swam and even slept under the stars one night.
Jack: I was with boys who yelled and wrestled. We joked and played games. We played pranks on each other and dared each other to do different things. I slept on the top bunk, and that is where I stayed almost every night for a week until the night we slept outside in our sleeping bags. I liked being on the top bunk because there I had a great view of the Rocky Mountains from my window.
My favorite activity was playing Capture the Flag. Running around outside in the cool, crisp air and laughing with new friends was exciting. I came almost nose to nose with a deer in the wild, and moose came to our campsite one night. I loved the campfire songs and the daily devotionals, or “devos.” We had an amazing time at camp.
