Last Sunday was the final day of the Space City Comic Con at the NRG Center. If you’ve never been to a comics convention, it can be described as a load of comics, science fiction/fantasy, pop-culture and anime fans getting together and going to panels about upcoming announcements, costume tricks and basically anything else.

Main attractions include the dealers’ room and the artists’ alley. These areas are where one-of-a-kind items are sold, everything from movie posters to framed art to faux battle armor to actual swords. Attendees often go the extra mile and come in full-out costumes of their favorite characters or even OC (“own character”) personas they have created themselves.

Whole families come together and enjoy the experience. Cons welcome children, yet are also fun for teenagers and adults.

Especially exciting are the special guests. Conventions bring in actors and actresses, famous cosplayers, voice actors, set-design stars and directors. Some conventions, like the huge San Diego Comic-Con International every summer, are known for being the site of major news announcements about popular movies such as Star Wars or TV shows like Game of Thrones.

This year, Space City Comic Con brought in a large number of artists and stars well known to fans of anime and the fantasy/science genre. They included Star Trek’s William Shatner and Kate Mulgrew, actress Lori Petty and Miltos Yerolemou, who played Syrio Forel, Arya’s swordfighting teacher in Game of Thrones.

I was especially excited to meet actress Karen Gillan, who played my favorite character, Nebula, in Guardians of the Galaxy.
