The view from the summit of Sunset Rock.
Every Texas native knows the invaluable nature of escaping the scorching temperatures of a southern summer. My personal oasis lies in the Smoky Mountains of Highlands, North Carolina. Boasting an elevation of 4,118 feet, Highlands’ temperatures seldom exceed 80 degrees, even during its “peak” in July.

The cool climate of this small town is just one of the many reasons that I look forward to my retreat here each summer. The scenic Appalachian Trail that weaves through the mountains and forests makes for a perfect afternoon hike with an even sweeter view.
While my family and I have conquered some of the more daunting trails, a personal favorite is a short, half-mile trek up the appropriately titled Sunset Rock. Picnic baskets and cameras in tow, dozens of families make their way to the flat-surfaced peak of the mountain to enjoy the sunset (or, for the early birds, sunrise) each day.
Another popular adventure destination in the household is Sliding Rock. Its name pretty much says it all – a large, smooth rock that kids, parents and the occasional dog slide down to be greeted by a clear, frigid pool of mountain water.

The local cafes and coffee shops that line the town square are frequented by my family; specifically the resident coffee shop, Buck’s Coffee – ironically not a playoff of the iconic Starbucks’ name – the owner’s name is actually Buck.
While I am irreversibly a city girl at heart, I treasure my time in the quaint town and natural beauty of Highlands. Until next year, old friend!
