As part of Horn Academy’s No Place for Hate initiative, students met three rescued dogs from Dogs of Character, which brings rescued dogs to schools to teach children lessons in perseverance, self worth, loyalty and empathy. The speaker shared each rescued dog’s story and described how students may have similar stories: stories of being ignored or unwanted or being the new kid in school. Students were taught how to treat dogs and their classmates with acts of kindness, how to ask for help from a teacher just as dogs ask for help with barking, and how important each one of them can be in another person’s life. Kindergartener Reese Morgenroth (pictured) gave a St. Bernard, Magnus, a pat. Magnus was abandoned as a puppy and was rescued by his owner, a firefighter, while she was on the job.
