Looks like we were in the wrong place, at the wrong time… AGAIN, as people all across Houston experienced the devastating flood that caused eight deaths, hundreds of submerged cars, thousands of people displaced, and even more people without electricity. At Alexander-Smith Academy, we fortunately were not as affected by the flood as other areas; however, we have students that did have to experience the wrath of this flood.
This flood caused ASA to be closed for two days, resulting in a mandatory Friday (ASA doesn’t usually have classes on Fridays). It seems like we were experiencing a part two to last year’s Memorial Day flood, even though some people said this flood caused more damage. One of the most affected areas was the Meyerland area where our own Ms. Demmer lives.
One main thought on people’s minds is the fact that not only had this flood caused damage, but this is the second time flooding occurred in Houston in the past year. Unfortunately, we cannot control Mother Nature, but at least we can control what to do about it.
There have been many relief causes for the people affected by this crisis. For example, the Red Cross raised tens of thousands of dollars to renew the damage that had been caused and to give people a sense of relief. With community support, residents were able to get their lives back in order.
Junior Rebecca Stetzer, whose house was flooded last year and this year, summarizes what she’s learned this past year: “Next time you feel like complaining about anything, don’t, because there is always someone who has it worse than you.”
