Galveston has created a new beach, a 15-block stretch west of 61st Street, and named it Babe's Beach. The city recently dedicated it to A.R. "Babe" Schwartz to honor his many years as a Texas senator and champion for the Texas Gulf coast. It is the first time a beach has been in that spot since Hurricane Carla in 1961. Schwartz, 89, was surrounded by family and friends on the new beach as he accepted the honor.
