Backpack blessing
What do students carry with them everywhere and rarely let out of their sights? Their backpacks, of course. “Each year at St. Francis Episcopal Church, to celebrate the beginning of a new school year, we invite students from the church and the community to bring their backpacks to the church for a special blessing and small medallion to attach to their backpack to signify that God goes with them no matter what challenges they face,” said Father Bob Wismer, associate rector and director of family ministry. This year the backpack service will be held on Aug. 21 and Aug. 28 at the 9 a.m. service at 345 Piney Point Road. The Blessing of the Backpacks grew from 40 or 50 students to between 150 and 200 last year.
