The 2016-2017 school year is in full swing at The Emery/Weiner School. As the first week of school welcomes new students and reconnects friends who haven’t seen each other throughout the summer, it wasn’t like many schools who simply start the school year off by going to their first class.
At Emery, the first day of school is on a Tuesday and the Sunday before school starts is full of students walking the halls and organizing their lockers, while new parents can shop for school spirit items including yard signs and t-shirts. Students also get the opportunity to see all of the changes to the school and see their favorite teachers.
The busy day wraps up with a back-to-school bash, which is similar to a pep rally, where the students and parents are invited to watch as the Emery cheerleaders perform for the first time of the school year and teams such as the Cross Country Team, Volleyball Team, and Football Team are introduced. Teachers and students also participate in fun games and activities.
Incoming junior Nikki Goldin is new to Emery this year and said that “coming in as a new student can be intimidating, but knowing lots of people through other activities takes the pressure away.” She went on to explain that the back-to-school bash is “a great way to meet other people in my grade and get acquainted with the school and the campus before the first day.”
This occasion is just another way that Emery continues to stand out and be different.
