The first day of school is always such a blur for me. It always consists of the same activities: walking from class to class, meeting new teachers, seeing friends for the first time in three months. I find it interesting how this routine day is so drastically different for students of different grades. You can clearly see the difference in a junior’s first day and a freshman’s first day, especially at Kinkaid.
This year, both of my sisters, Julia and Meredith, started their freshman year. In preparation for the first day, they decorated their lockers to look like something that could be an advertisement for the Container Store, and spent at least an hour picking out the perfect first day outfits. The morning of the first day, I could clearly see their excitement and nervousness. My sister Julia told me she’s most excited for “free periods, and the freedom of getting to choose your outfit every day.” They started their day by meeting up with friends and making sure they had their route to each class mapped out in their heads. I remember being the same way my freshman year.
My first day as a junior paled in comparison. My locker now consists of a couple of pictures and a white board. My first day outfit was jeans and a pink tank from urban outfitters (that took all of 5 minutes to pull from my closet). At this point, I’ve kind of lost that back-to-school excitement I had freshman year. I think I speak for the majority of Kinkaid juniors when I say school is going to be more of a challenge this year than it has ever been before because of harder classes and the added stress of starting to look into college. But, this year does come with the added perk of being an upperclassman. This means I can drive to school, leave early if I have an afternoon free period, and have even better chances at getting cast in the winter musical.
Though each school year brings a new set of pros and cons, they’re more similar than different. Being a junior may be completely different from being a freshman, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. I loved the first day of school my freshman year and still love it now, just for different reasons.
