Picture this: you’re enjoying a nice summer vacation in Mexico. Maybe you’re sitting on your couch, eating junk foods, and binge watching Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix. One second it’s June, then in a blink of an eye, it’s August and you’re back in school.
No matter which school you go to, it’s pretty hard to go through four years of high school without experiencing stress. So in spirit of the new school year, here are some ways you could try preventing and dealing with school stress from DeBakey students.
1. Music
“The way I deal with stress is listening to music while I do homework and taking breaks to refresh myself.” Erika Cruz, sophomore.
Music is proven to relive stress, and it’s also proven to help studying things for big tests! Playing some soft pop or classical music can help you relax your mind and body while studying and doing homework.
2. Get Some Sleep
“Stress increases due to the lack of sleep that [people] get. Homework and studies are important, however, they are not as important as getting the right amount of sleep every night.” Sena Saygili, former DeBakey student.
For most people, getting a good 7-8hours of sleep really makes or breaks it. Of course there will be some nights where you don’t get that amount, but it’s better to sit in class and take a test awake rather than asleep.
3. Try Herbal Remedies
“…Whenever I would start feeling stress during studying, I would use [a] Eucalyptus Stress Reliever Lotion.” Brianna Pham, sophomore.
Herbal remedies and lotions like Eucalyptus products show to help people de-stress and feel less anxious. Teas of chamomile or mint are also proven to help ease stress and calm you down.
4. Don’t Procrastinate!
All my interviews with DeBakey students had one thing in common. It seems like stress likes to follow procrastinators, people who just save everything for last minute. I am one of those people. Every year I tell myself that I will not procrastinate this school year, but it happens.
Take baby steps to working ahead and not saving things for last minute.
Whether it’s balancing school and extracurriculars or just dealing with the tsunami wave of assignments, let’s start the 2016-17 school year on the right foot and hopefully, stress free.
