Fun on the fields

Families poured onto the fields surrounding West University Elementary School on Oct. 1 to pitch tents for a day and night of fun at the annual Fathers & Flashlights campout. Pictured (from left) are this year’s co-chairs Kara Schaefer, Kelly Butler and Kristine Martinez. This year marked the 10th anniversary along with a record-high attendance of 529 children and 259 dads. Daryl and Aaron Hoover and Jennifer Gatto, the inaugural Fathers & Flashlights Chairs and visionaries of the event, served as honorary chairs. Children’s Memorial Hermann supported the event as Camp Boss, the $10,000 lead sponsor. The event raised a total of $116,000 for the Friends of West University Place Parks Fund, Inc. Friends is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to raising funds for the renovation, development and improvement of parks and green spaces in the parks of the City of West U. Planning for Fathers & Flashlights 2017 has already begun. The Moorhead, Woody and Williams families will co-chair.
