One of my favorite activities I participate in at The Kinkaid School is Dance Company. I joined Dance Company (DCo as we all call it) last year and have loved it every since. The girls and boys of the company have become one big family. Honestly, sometimes we find ourselves spending more time with each other than our own families. This is especially the case during tech weeks and long weekend rehearsals.
Krissy Richmond (or “Mom” as many of us call her) is Kinkaid’s main dance instructor; all who meet her can’t help but to love her. Her encouraging nature and happy demeanor are truly what keep all of the members of the company going.
Kinkaid’s dance company is particularly unique because of our 3 “DCo Dudes:” Ashton Lambert, Austin Karkowsky and Evan Rosen. We have yet to find another dance company with guys, particularly guys as great as ours. When asked what it was like to be a guy in the company, Evan Rosen said, “We’ve grown really close because of how outnumbered we are.” With Austin and Evan graduating, we’ve had to start scouting out new male talent to take their spots.
My absolute favorite part of Dance Company is the spring choreography projects the juniors and seniors create. Every upperclassman is given the opportunity to choreograph their own piece with a partner or even on their own. Some of my favorite pieces last year were these choreography projects. Students are put in charge of everything in these pieces from music and style to lighting and costumes. This will be my first time to choreograph a piece and I could not be more excited!
This year, DCo is taking on the famous “Sing, Sing, Sing” along with a wide variety of other numbers of multiple styles in our fall show. There is truly something for everyone! The shows will be on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. and they are both open to the public and free to attend.
