Foodie in the making
Memorial Middle School sixth grader Kate Daniel cooked her way to Food Network’s Chopped Jr. Chosen from 5,000 applicants, Kate shot the episode in New York, and it aired on Nov. 8. At age 11, Kate was the youngest of the four competitors. She mastered the appetizer competition by creating a spring pasta with a light lemon cream sauce of spring peas, hotdog pasta, lentil chips and veggie cream cheese. This experience, along with Kate’s goal of being a “high-powered businesswoman and chef,” inspired Kate and mom Brooke Daniel’s creation of Figlia Kitchen, a kids’ cooking school. In December, Figlia Kitchen will hold gingerbread-decorating workshops, as well as a winter-break camp.
