Every year students at DeBakey High School look forward to celebrate IFEST (International Festival), a festival celebrating the diversity of America as well as the diversity of the students at DeBakey.
Students have the option to dress up in traditional clothings of their culture as well as performing traditional dances with cultural clubs at DeBakey. The people dancing in the showcase practice for many hours every week to pull off an outstanding dance performance for the school.
This year DeBakey had a showcase of students participating in Hispanic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Korean, Japanese, and Nigerian clubs.
Embracing heritage and national culture is extremely important in times like this when people may feel oppressed or targeted. This is not the case at DeBakey as the majority of the students are the minority.
I'm glad I go to such a diverse school where I can express my culture and where I can learn about other ones as well.
