Levy Park

LEVY PARK About 7,500 people celebrated the reopening of Levy Park on Feb. 25. The renovated park has a creative playground, a dog park, a community garden, a modern pavilion, a lawn and scheduled classes. (Photo: Morris Malakoff)

Explore neighborhood parks and you’ll find more than playground equipment and grass. Check out these upcoming events and programs.

Evelyn’s Park

4400 Bellaire Blvd.

This brand-new Bellaire park opens Earth Day, Sat., April 22 with a Picnic in the Park celebration 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The Grand Opening will include culinary events, a mini-farmer’s market, beer and wine tastings, fitness classes and kids’ activities.

Levy Park

3801 Eastside St.

The newly reopened Levy Park offers free activities daily. Mondays: Yoga 6 p.m., Zumba 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays: Hula Hooping 11:30 a.m., Yoga 6 p.m. Wednesdays: Piano Concert noon, Tai Chi 6 p.m., Yoga 6 p.m. Thursdays: Houston Public Library Story Hour 10 a.m., MET Dance for Adults 6 p.m., Yoga 6 p.m. Fridays: Yoga 6 p.m., Tango 7 p.m. (last Friday of the month), Writers in the Schools, 7-8 p.m. (first Friday). Saturdays: Bootcamp 8:30 a.m., Yoga 10 a.m., MET Dance for Kids 1 p.m. (second and fourth Saturdays), Young Audiences of Houston 1 p.m. (first, third and fifth Saturdays), Houston Museum of Natural Science 2 p.m. (fourth Saturday). Sundays: Yoga 10 a.m., POUND 11 a.m.

Discovery Green

There is something – a fitness class, concert, movie night and more – at Discovery Green every day. Here’s a sampling. Yoga on Mondays 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. through June 26. Core-Focused Yoga on Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 p.m. through June 27. Circus Arts on Tuesdays 6-8 p.m. through June 27. Zumba on Wednesdays 6-7 p.m. through June 28. Parkour on Thursdays 6:30-8 p.m. through June 29. Hatha Yoga on Saturdays 9-10 a.m. through June 24. Young Writer’s Workshop on Saturdays 10:30-11:30 a.m. STEM Saturdays on Saturdays 12:30-1:30 p.m. through June 24. Hermann Park

Bring your kids for Children’s Story Hour and activities after on Fridays, 10-11 a.m., in the McGovern Centennial Gardens. They can also listen as students from local schools perform in the free Student Performance Series starting on April 7.

The Hermann Park Conservancy’s gala, Evening in the Park, will take place Fri., April 28, 6:30 p.m., at Molly Ann Smith Plaza and Jones Reflection Pool. The event includes cocktails, dinner, dessert and dancing.

Buffalo Bayou Park

Buffalo Bayou Park is good for hiking, canoeing, kayaking and more. Events include:

Second Saturday Boat Ride, April 8, 10 a.m.-2 p.m

Waugh Bat Colony Boat Tour, April 8, 7-8:30 p.m.

“Looking Back” History Tour, April 15, 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m.

Walking Tour, April 15, 10:30-11:30 a.m

Blanket Bingo, April 20, 6-9 p.m.

2017 Bayou Bash, April 22, 12-4 p.m.

Nature Discovery Center

7112 Newcastle St.

The Nature Discovery Center has been undergoing a facelift and will showcase the renovations Sat., May 6, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Also, upcoming programs include:

Monday Morning Gardening (for adults): April 3 and May 1, 9:30 a.m.-noon. 

Curious Kids (preschoolers, ages 3-5): Tuesdays, 10-11:15 a.m. or 4-5:15 p.m., through May 23.

Lunch with the Birds (all ages): Wednesdays, noon-1:15 p.m., through May 10.

Walk on the Wild Side (all ages): Sat., April 8, 10 a.m.  

Memorial Park

7575 North Picnic Ln.

Memorial Park is home to events and activities throughout the year. The next event is the golf tournament benefiting Memorial Park Conservancy May 9. Call 713-863-8403. In the fall, popular activities include adult softball league, adult flag football or adult kickball.
