Lamar’s school store is a top destination on campus, selling uniforms, books and, its most popular merchandise, snacks. Mr. Gregory White is the manager of the store and has worked at Lamar High School for 13 years. The last eight of those years have been working at the school store, where proceeds provide assistance for students in need.
Mr. White loves the opportunity to interact with students and parent volunteers every day. “My favorite thing about Lamar is how diverse it is and how many different types of people I get to meet and help. I grew up going to an all Catholic boys’ high in New Orleans, and I love how Lamar is so much more like the real world with all the different cultures we have at the school,” said Mr. White.
The school store makes a big difference to kids who are in need because, believe it or not, it generates between $500 and $1,200 dollars a day just from the proceeds of selling healthy snacks to students. The best selling snacks are the gummies that contain real fruit juice, with at least 100 bags sold every day. Mr. White mentioned, “The snacks all have something healthy about them like reduced fat, whole grain, or low sugar.”
The school store has competition when it comes to selling snacks however. Lots of students sell snacks like honey buns or hot chips which are less healthy than what Mr. White offers.
”The students even have their own website to sell snacks which is the funniest thing I have seen during my time at Lamar,” said Mr. White. He thinks this is very funny because on the website, you can see the snack choices all of the different sellers have to offer and you can then order the snacks and have them delivered to you while you’re at Lamar.
Overall, Mr. White really enjoys working for the Lamar School Store and helping out students as well as interacting with them. Next time you’re at Lamar, come on down to the school store and buy a healthy snack or two to help raise money for students in need.
