When David and Peggy Hays gave their daughter Laura Hays’ beau, Ben Benson, a bottle of Aberlour 12 Scotch whisky, little did they know a wedding would occur June 13 in Aberlour, Scotland. The couple, who met in 2016 at British watering hole The Phoenix on Westheimer, were the 99th couple to get married in St. Margaret’s Church since 1876 and only the second Americans to marry there. Most of the men wore kilts, but Ben added cowboy boots and a hat for Texas flavor. The reception at a Victorian mansion, Dowans Hotel in the nearby Speyside region of Scotland, is famous for its beautiful scenery and for the multitude of whisky distilleries. After the grand events, Ben’s parents, Roger and Sandy Benson, never thought whiskey could taste so good.
