The annual Maverick Ramble hosted by SJS occurred this year on Oct. 12. It was cold, it was dry, and it was hilly - at least by Houston’s standards. A location swap this year from TC Jester Park, the new race spot was Spring Creek Park. The boys and girls cross country teams were ready to go out and prove themselves in a race on the home course.
Sophomore Cici Calhoun placed first on the team with a new personal best and a 10th-place finish at 20:08.7. Sophomore Emmanuel Sgouros placed fourth overall, coming in first for the boys team at 16:14.
“The cold was amazing, and we all ran really well. Most of us got a PR [personal record], which is really promising for SPC since it’s the same course,” sophomore Caroline Thames said.
“It was a great experience,” sophomore Rebecca Bollich said. “Because the SPC course is the same, our times and running in small packs gives us confidence for SPC.”
Cici Calhoun gives her final kick for the last stretch of the difficult race.
A runner for the boys team, sophomore Brady Puckett, was proud of the team.
“I think the Ramble was a great cross country meet that really depicts the St. John’s spirit,” he said.
Overall, the boys team came in third in the varsity race, and the girls team came in fourth. The teams are training hard for the final race of the season, on Nov. 9.
