School supplies mitzvah project
Jillian Garrett and Zev Goetz were called to the Torah at Congregation Beth Yeshurun for their B’nai Mitzvah on Aug. 21-22. Zev and Jillian are eighth graders at The Emery/Weiner School. Their Torah portion focused on justice, so they decided their B’nai mitzvah project would be centered around social justice, including access to education. They chose to sponsor Lockhart Elementary School, located in Third Ward, and donate to local nonprofit Eight Million Stories, which helps educate and provide practical skills to vulnerable youth. Jillian and Zev collected school supplies from friends and family, through an Amazon Wish List and by placing donation boxes in front of businesses. They delivered school supplies and monetary donations to the school and will donate a portion of their B’nai mitzvah gift money to Eight Million Stories. Zev and Jillian will be accepting items through mid-October; find their Amazon Wish List by searching Lockhart Elementary Wish List: Garrett Goetz.
