A winter story walk
Kindergartener Andrew Sauer (pictured, left) and his sister, third grader Claudia Sauer (right), enjoyed the River Oaks Elementary School winter story walk. The siblings walked along an outdoor trail that brought to life the book Blizzard by Caldecott-honoree author John Rocco. Houston’s rare cold weather coincided perfectly with the story walk, which made the subject matter more relevant. River Oaks Elementary PTO members created the story walk to provide a socially distanced way for children to participate in a fun, educational activity. In addition to walking through the story, students received winter wonderland adventure kits, participated in a winter-themed estimation-jar contest, and created snowflakes in art class. Special guest John Rocco attended a live, virtual visit with the students and answered their questions about his book and his experience writing and illustrating Blizzard.
