Blooming at Pershing
Emily Vaughan completed her Girl Scout Silver Award. She was looking for a way to combine her interests of education, being outdoors, and volunteering, and decided to support the garden area at Pershing Middle School. Pershing students use the garden as a classroom, but they needed spots to sit. Emily worked with the gardening teacher, Elizabeth Welling, to build benches. Southland Lumber Company donated hardware, and Big Z Lumber provided the lumber at wholesale prices. Panda parent and woodworker Chris Nelson helped Emily design the benches. Alongside her dad, Steven Vaughan, and Nelson, Emily spent many hours constructing five benches. She is now a freshman at Bellaire High School.
