NewSpring’s most recent American Sign Language (ASL) class gathered at the Cafe Panda Garden on Fountainview to share a meal while practicing their newly acquired language skills and to celebrate their graduation from the ASL program. As a community nonprofit organization, NewSpring provides access to under-resourced students and adults through cultural enrichment, economic opportunities, and spiritual growth. Nina Belekova (pictured, left) was inspired to learn American Sign Language after watching the sign interpreter during the Astros games. She is now studying to become a professional interpreter. Jorge and Leandra Ramos (pictured, right) learned ASL to be able to better communicate with their hearing-impaired son. All three students learned from Sheila Johnstone (pictured, second from left) who has been teaching ASL since 1995. For more information about upcoming ASL classes, visit newspringcenter.org/sign-language.
